As Hurricane Sandy churned inland as a downgraded storm, residents up and down the battered mid-Atlantic region woke on Tuesday to lingering waters, darkened homes and the daunting task of cleaning up from once-in-a-generation storm surges and their devastating effects.
Power remained out for roughly six million people, including a large swath of Manhattan. Early risers stepped out into debris-littered streets that remained mostly deserted as dawn shed light on the extent of the damage. Bridges remained closed, and seven subway tunnels under the East River were flooded. Other mass transit service, including commuter rails, was also still suspended.
A wind-tossed construction crane atop one of the tallest buildings in New York City still dangled 80 stories over West 57th Street, across the street from Carnegie Hall, after coming loose during the storm.
The storm was the most destructive in the 108-year history of New York’s subway system, said Joseph J. Lhota, the chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, in an early morning statement.
Tom Cruise hit sister magazines Life & Style and In Touch with a $50 million lawsuit on Wednesday over recent reports that the 50-year-old “Mission: Impossible” actor had virtually abandoned his 6-year-old daughter, Suri.
Cruise filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles over In Touch’s July 30th cover story (“Suri in Tears: Abandoned by Her Dad”) and In Touch’s Oct. 1 issue which rehashed similar allegations.
In the complaint, a copy of which was obtained by the Daily News, Cruise charges that “through his representatives, plaintiff has attempted to correct these fabrications by providing defendants with the true bacts before the lies went to press. But defendants have demonstrated that they have no interest in the truth, and will stop at nothing to push the sales of their tabloids, even if this means exploiting a defenseless six year old child on their cover.”
Both magazines, owned by Bauer Publishing, claimed Cruise had grown increasingly estranged from his daughter after his divorce from her mother, Katie Holmes, this summer.
“It’s been 44 days (at press time) since Tom Cruise has been photographed with his daughter Suri, last spotted together at Disney World on Aug. 4,” began the In Touch cover story.
“Tom doesn’t go around suing people,” Bert Fields said in a statement. “He’s not a litigious guy. But when these sleaze peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he’s going to sue.”
“These serial defamers are foreign-owned companies with their global headquarters in Hamburg. They take money from unsuspecting Americans by selling their malicious garbage. Having to pay a libel judgment may slow them down.”
In addition to a $50 million judgment, Cruise is also asking for punitive damages for invasion of privacy.
“Tom will undoubtedly give the money to charity. He always has,” added Fields.
Fresh from her split with advertising exec Nate Taylor, the 27-year-old actress stepped out Wednesday in New York City’s West Village. Wearing Nike sweats, an Everlast hoodie and a Yankees cap, the Avengers star appeared to have just wrapped up a workout. Also in hand were her phone and a bag of takeout food.
Although Scarlett’s most famous ex, Ryan Reynolds, has since remarried after meeting new ladylove Blake Lively, we’re still holding out hope for a redux with Jared Leto. The duo were spotted holding hands in September at the Democratic National Convention, although the sighting was dismissed as strictly platonic.
Somehow we don’t think she’ll have trouble landing a new guy.
The on-again, off-again pair were photographed together again on Tuesday night, where Mayer celebrated his 35th birthday with about a dozen pals, including 27-year-old Perry, at downtown NYC eatery Freeman’s.
Decked in a ladylike floral dress, Perry sat right next to the birthday boy during the low-key meal, which went on for several hours; Mayer’s dad, Richard, was also on hand for the night.
“It was a very tame and civil,” an eyewitness said. “They talked and laughed but nobody got crazy. Everyone looked like they were having fun. John seemed happy.”
Adds another observer: “John had a great time. He’s matured.”
Before Tuesday’s festivities, the twosome were spotted spending time together in the Big Apple over the weekend: Mayer supported Perry during a private concert at Best Buy Theater in NYC’s Times Square on Sunday, followed by an intimate dinner at Pearl Restaurant and cocktails at Soho House.
It was a split that came as a shock to many of their fans, but it seems that the breakdown of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ marriage wasn’t so sudden. Court papers suggest that the couple’s relationship was doomed six months prior to the announcement that they were separating.
According to the documents obtained exclusively by the National Enquirer, their marriage had ‘broken down irretrievably for a period of at least six months immediately preceding.’
In the legal papers, which are dated August 17, 2012 and signed by New York State Supreme Court Judge Matthew F. Cooper, it also reveals details of the divorce decree, including the specifics regarding their custody agreement with their six-year-old daughter Suri.
The actor will be paying child support for the next 12 years until Suri turns 18, but no doubt it will not make a dent in his estimated $250million fortune.
Experts have calculated that the expense will cost Cruise $4.8 million in total.
The War of the Worlds star isn’t letting it get him down though, and has instead thrown himself into work.
Holmes, on the other hand, lives permanently in New York City now and is often seen with Suri as she moves on with her life.
The actress was rushed to the hospital yesterday for what was initially believed to be a lung infection. Her mother Dina Lohan says she suffers from bronchial asthma, and blamed New York City’s high pollen count.
“Lindsay had not been feeling well all last week following a week of high pollen counts in New York,” Dina Lohan told the Daily News. “She has had bronchial asthma ever since she was little.”
Millions of people have seasonal allergies to pollen, a fine, powdery substance produced by plants, according to the Mayo Clinic. That allergic reaction is a common trigger for asthma.
Though asthma victims sometimes don’t realize they are having an ongoing attack, confusing it with bronchitis or other respiratory ailments, by Sunday the 26-year-old’s mother had put her foot down, claims a friend of the “Liz & Dick” star.
“Dina brought Lindsay to the hospital emergency room herself,” a friend said.
“She’s at Dina’s home now, resting,” the source added.
“Her mother is keeping a close eye on her. She’s safe.”

The Two And A Half Men beau, 34, skipped the Emmy Awards – where his co-star Jon Cryer won outstanding lead actor in a comedy – to spend time with the Black Swan star, 29.
And they couldn’t keep their hands off each other, putting on a tactile show of affection.
Paris Hilton continued to do damage control Thursday, apologizing for saying gay men were “disgusting” and “probably had AIDS.”
“I am so sorry and so upset that I caused pain to my gay friends, fans and their families,” Hilton said in part of a lengthy apology she released to the the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD.) “Gay people are the strongest and most inspiring people I know.”
Hilton’s apology comes the same day an audio recording of her speaking about gay people appeared on the Internet.
The audio was recorded as Hilton was riding in a cab with “an openly gay male model” during New York Fashion Week in the early morning hours of Friday, September 7.
Shortly after the tape was posted Hilton’s publicist said her comments were expressions of concern about the dangers of unprotected sex, not homophobic slurs.
Hilton’s publicist confirmed the recording was authentic, but said, “It was not her intent to make any derogatory comments about all gays.” [CNN]
Lindsay Lohan was arrested in New York early Wednesday in connection with leaving the scene of an accident, New York police tell RadarOnline.com. The actress made contact with the knee of a pedestrian as she parked her Porsche Cayenne in a spot at Manhattan’s Dream Hotel at around 12:30 a.m. ET. Despite hitting the man, Lohan, 26, still went inside the hotel to attend an event with her passengers. When she left the hotel around 2:30 a.m., police were waiting for her as she stepped outside. The Long Island native was arrested on the misdemeanor, handcuffed, given a desk appearance ticket and released on her own recognizance. Police said Lindsay was “cooperative” while being taken into her custody and that alcohol was not involved. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital to be checked out.
