Chicago Teachers Strike Ends

Chicago students return to school on today after a teachers’ strike ended, thrilling parents who had to stay home from work to care for their kids, pay for alternative childcare or leave them with friends and relatives for more than a week.

Representatives of the 29,000 striking Chicago public school teachers and support staff voted on Tuesday to suspend their strike and accept a compromise agreement on a new three-year contract with Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Some 350,000 kindergarten, elementary and high school students return to classes after missing seven school days in the third-largest U.S. school district after New York and Los Angeles.

It was the first time since 1987 that Chicago teachers had walked off the job and nearly everyone in the city seemed relieved that it was over.

“All our members are glad to back with their kids,” said Karen Lewis, the outspoken former high school chemistry teacher who heads the union. Lewis led the teachers out of the classroom over Emanuel’s demand for sweeping education reforms that the union believed were misguided.

Only a fraction of the students went to nearly 150 centers around Chicago set up to care for children during the strike. The union had warned that the city-run centers would be a “train wreck” with caregivers lacking proper credentials.

While there were no major problems, most parents opted to keep their children at home. Many kids passed the time by watching television, playing video games, doing crafts and chatting on social media.

“They’ve been around sleeping all day,” said parent Dawn McNamara of her daughter, a sophomore in high school, and her friends. “It seemed like it was going to take forever (to settle the strike),” McNamara said.

Teachers were all smiles as they left the vote to end the strike on Tuesday, with one overheard telling a colleague on her cell phone: “Tell our people we’re going back. We’re going to see our babies.”

Even the tough-talking mayor Emanuel choked up slightly at a press conference after the strike was called off. Emanuel said that he fought so hard for reforms because he had seen the blank stares of some children “whose vitality has been stripped from them, any sense of a promise or a future.”

“The only way I know to bridge that look in their eyes and the promise and opportunity that exists in the city of Chicago is in the classrooms of the schools,” Emanuel said.

While the strike ended, some of the issues that spawned it remain. Most Chicago public schools are struggling academically, the high school graduation rate lags the national average substantially and the school district is in dire financial straits.

Amanda Bynes Meltdown…Lindsay Lohan Comments

The former Nickelodeon star locked herself in a West Hollywood dressing room for nearly two hours Monday, TMZ reports. Bynes, 26, was shopping at Los Angeles boutique Kin when she retreated into the room for an hour and 45 minutes, according to the shopping attendants who were present. A disoriented Bynes then attempted to leave with a bathing suit still on underneath her clothing. She also took a cab from the store.

Bynes’ strange behavior has been escalating as of late. On Sunday, her car was impounded after she was caught driving on a suspended license by Burbank Airport Police at 8 a.m. Earlier last week, Bynes had been photographed smoking from a pipe in her car, also on a suspended license. This follows a series of reckless driving incidents, including two hit-and-runs and a DUI, in the past year.

Bynes’ increasing driving troubles even spurred commentary from that other troubled former child actress, Lindsay Lohan, on Sunday. “Why did I get put in jail and a nickelodeon star has had NO punishment(s) so far,” asked Lohan, also 26, on her Twitter page.

Usher and Shakira are joining “The Voice” as new coaches next spring, when Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green take a break from the show, NBC said Monday. Original coaches Adam Levine and Blake Shelton will remain on board in season four, the network said. The singing contest began airing its third season last week.
Aguilera is going on the road to support her new album, while Green is developing new music and a sitcom based on his life for NBC. “As I have expressed since Day One of the show … I am a singer and performer first and I am so excited to get back to that love,” Aguilera said in a statement. But she expressed eagerness about returning to “The Voice” in the future. The addition of the two new coaches will surely make for an interesting Season four.

Kim Kardashian Freezes Her Eggs

Kim Kardashian has had a busy few months, between the highly publicized divorce, spending time with beau Kanye West, taking care of her retail stores, and freezing her eggs to preserve the Kardashian genes. Apparently Kim really wants kids and is taking precautions to ensure she’ll be able to have one when the time is right.

“I decided to get my eggs frozen so that when the time is right I am prepared in case something happens,” she said. Kardashian spoke candidly about the process on last night’s season finale of “keeping Up”.

Kardashian also said she has always wanted a family, but didn’t “take the time to find someone”. Although she’s been married twice, so we have to assume she means she didn’t take the time to find the right someone. She certainly seems to think Kanye may be the man for her, though, as she spoke candidly about her relationship during a recent visit to “The View” and said she believes it’s a permanent thing.

First Look At New American Idol Judges

FOX announced Sunday that Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban were officially joining Mariah Carey and Randy Jackson as judges on American Idol. Shortly after that announcement, the show’s longtime host Ryan Seacrest shared the first shot of the brand-new foursome at the judges’ table via Facebook. “After some musical chairs, here’s how the new American Idol judges will be seated,” Seacrest, 37, wrote beneath a photo of Carey, 42, Urban, 44, Minaj, 29 and Jackson, 56, sitting down together (with Seacrest standing above) in midtown NYC.

“With the exciting addition of Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj, alongside Randy Jackson, American Idol’s star power has never been so great,” executive producer Simon Fuller said in a statement. With the addition of these new judges, this promises to be a very entertaining season!

Ellen DeGeneres Sitcom Picked Up By NBC

NBC has officially picked up a new sitcom from Daytime Talk Show giant Ellen DeGeneres. The currently untitled single-camera comedy, is being written by Lauren Pomerantz, the senior writer for DeGeneres’ daytime talk show. Ellen will join Pomerantz on executive producer duties for the sitcom, which focuses on a successful and independent 32-year-old woman who, convinced she is certain to die alone, seeks the advice of those around her to reassure her that living as a singleton was the right choice.

This latest sale is the second in quick succession for DeGeneres and A Very Good Production; only last season, NBC bought the comedy The Smart One, another Ellen-produced show, in a bidding war.

ABC later picked up the project for a pilot, which will star Ellen’s wife, Portia De Rossi, as a “brilliant and successful woman who begrudgingly goes to work for her less-brainy but more popular sister – a former beauty queen, weather girl and now big-city Mayor.”
